Facebook parent company Meta has laid off 11,000 employees last month, impacting not only their lives but that of their families and causing pain, uncertainty and chaos for thousands.

However, instead of being sad, a six-year-old girl claims she is glad her mum was fired!

Shelly Kalish joined Meta in June last year. On November 11 of this year she woke up to find her name on the list of those laid off. A report by Business Insider said she received an e-mail saying she too had been made part of cost-cutting measures at Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

“I kind of just turned off my phone. I called my husband and he and my kids came in,” she said, “They kind of jumped on me and gave me a hug.”

Later that day, when Shelly told her daughter, she got a rather unexpected response. “Why don’t they need you anymore?” she asked and then said, “Yay! Now you can spend more time with me.” “You’re still the best mom…” came another consolation.

Kalish admitted she is glad to spend more time with her family but also that she is looking forward to finding a new job. She also said her daughter’s response gave her much-needed motivation in these difficult times and also a new perspective on the situation.

Earlier Zuckerberg wrote an open letter in which he confessed to a ‘miscalculation’ about the post-Covid world. “At the start of Covid, the world moved online and e-commerce surge led to outsized revenue growth. Many predicted this would be permanent… continue even after the pandemic. I did too… so I made the decision to significantly increase our investments.”

However, the boom seen during the pandemic was not sustainable, he said, indicating that the social media giant had to resort to the ‘last option’ of downsizing its workforce.
