After the World Cup, Lionel Messi ‘wins’ Instagram as well – Times of India

Two days after winning the World Cup, there is a furious debate about whether Lionel Messi is the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) footballer. That might or might not be true but Messi is certainly the GOAT on Instagram. Messi led Argentina to a hard-fought win over France in the 2022 World Cup final and soon posted an image of him holding the prestigious Jules Rimet trophy. That image is now the most-liked post on Instagram. At the time of filing this copy, the post had garnered over 67 million likes and counting.

Move over The Egg, we have a new winner

Prior to Messi’s post, it was a random photo of an egg, which had a simple caption, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram.” People duly obliged and The Egg has been the most-liked post since 2019. However, Messi had dislodged it from the top position.

In fact, Messi now dominates the list of most-liked posts on Instagram. Of the five most-liked Instagram posts, four have Messi in them. The third photo — with 42 million plus likes — is the photo of him and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess. Fourth on the list is Messi with the World Cup trophy on an aeroplane, which had 37 million likes. The fifth most-liked photo is Messi in bed with the World Cup trophy which had close to 35 million likes.
If you look further down the list, then footballers’ posts are among the most-liked posts. Messi has eight of the 20 most liked posts on Instagram. Notably, seven of those posts have been during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. It’s fair to say that Messi has indeed won Instagram as well and is certainly the GOAT when it comes to most liked posts on the social media platform.
