Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a top commander in the IRGC, was among at least five people killed, Iranian media reports.

Several people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, according to Iranian media and Syrian officials.

Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander-in-chief of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), is one of at least five people killed in the attack, Iranian media reported.

Journalists who happened to be at the scene in the Mezzeh district of Damascus, where the embassy is located, saw smoke rising from the rubble, and dangerous vehicles parked outside. An Iranian flag was hung on a pole in front of the debris and both Syrian and Iranian foreign ministers were seen at the scene.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad condemned the “terrorists”.

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack that targeted the Iranian embassy in Damascus killing several innocent people,” Mekdad said in a statement carried by the Syrian news agency SANA.

When asked about the attack, a spokesman for the Israeli army told reporters: “We have not commented on reports published by foreign countries.”

Iranian Ambassador Hossein Akbari, who was not injured, said at least five people had been killed in the attack and that Tehran’s response would be “brutal”.

Since the Palestinian group Hamas led an attack on Israel on October 7, Israel has increased airstrikes in Syria against the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah and Iran’s IRGC, both supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The explosion in Damascus comes just a few days after the Israeli air strikes to be killed many people in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo.

Ali Vaez, head of the International Crisis Group’s Iran Project, says Israel’s attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria “is tantamount to targeting another country on its soil”.

“Overall, this looks like a low-level regional war. There has not been a regional conflict, but it seems that Israel is trying to do everything it can to escalate the conflict,” Vaez told Al Jazeera.

“[This] it puts Israel in a winning position because Israel knows that Iran does not want to be dragged into a regional war, so if it increases its attack against Iranian assets and workers in Syria, it will probably be free, and if Iran responds. and revenge, then it becomes a valid reason to extend the war. “
