Japan has issued a tsunami warning after a major earthquake in Taiwan

Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines have issued tsunami warnings after a major earthquake hit Taiwan on Tuesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that tsunami warnings are in effect for coastal areas of the country.

Taiwan experienced a 7.5 magnitude earthquake at 8:58 am on Apr. 3, 2024. Its depth was about 35 kilometers, or 21 miles, The Associated Press reported.

The JMA said a small sea level change has been detected in southern Japan.

It advised residents in areas around Okinawa Island, Miyakojima Island and Yaeyama Island to evacuate immediately, warning that waves could reach 9.8 ft.

“Tsunami waves are approaching the coasts. Leave as fast as you can. Waves can hit repeatedly. Continue to evacuate until all warnings are lifted,” JAM said. first report and Al Jazeera.
