George Carlin’s estate settles lawsuit against podcasters’ AI comedy special

There will also be no follow-up to the AI-produced George Carlin podcast Dudesy. In January, Carlin’s place prosecuted against the podcast and its creators Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen, accusing them of violating the artists’ right of publicity and violating their rights. Now, the two sides have reached an agreement, which includes the exclusive removal of the comedy special from the history of Dudesy. Sasso and Kultgen also agreed to sign off on any platform and not to use Carlin’s image, voice or likeness without permission from the site, according to The New York Times.

The AI algorithm that Dudesy used for this special was trained on thousands of hours of Carlin’s performance spanning many years of his career. It made enough material for an hour-long special, but it didn’t stand out as much of a late-night drama with basic punchlines and little to show for Carlin’s sense of humor. In a statement, Carlin’s daughter, Kelly, called it “an underused image associated with dishonest people.”

Josh Schiller, who represented Carlin’s estate in court, told The Times that “[t]the world is beginning to appreciate the power and dangers that can exist in AI tools, which can imitate words, create fake images and edit videos.” He added that “it is not a problem that will go away by itself” and that “it has to be. face swift and vigorous action in the courts.” AI software companies “must also be held accountable,” the lawyer said.

The lawsuit is one of many lawsuits filed by developers against AI companies and people who use the technology to train algorithms on someone else’s work. Several fake news writers and authors including George RR Martin, John Grisham and Jodi Picoult sued OpenAI for using their work to teach its main languages. The New York Times as well as a few other media organizations have also sued the company for using their articles for educational purposes and for consideration giving birth the content is verbatim without quotation marks.
