Download: improve weather forecasts, and reopen nuclear power plants

As the number of satellites in space grows, and as we rely on them to augment critical functions on Earth, the need to accurately predict hurricane season is becoming more urgent.

Scientists have long known that the sun’s energy can change the mass of the atmosphere. But it is very difficult to predict precisely what kinds of changes in density will lead to increased solar activity.

Now, scientists are working on a space model to help scientists improve their models of how the sun affects the environment below Earth’s orbit. If done well, they will be able to protect satellites even in turbulent weather, reducing the risk of a catastrophic collision in space. Read the full article.

How to reopen a nuclear power plant

A nuclear power plant in Michigan can get a second life thanks to a $1.52 billion loan from the US Department of Energy. If successful, it would be the first time a closed nuclear power plant has been reopened in the US.

The Palisades Power Plant shut down on May 20, 2022, after 50 years of low-power generation. But the owner thinks the economy has improved over the past few years and plans to reopen by the end of next year.

A successful restart would be a critical step for the US nuclear fleet, and help move the country closer to climate goals. But re-opening is not as simple as turning on the lights. This is what it takes to reopen a nuclear power plant.
