Video does not show ‘expulsion of Chinese citizens from Indonesian city’


An old video was re-shared in 2024 following false claims showing Chinese citizens being evicted from a city on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The video has been circulating on social media since 2023 about protests against a mining company on the island of Sulawesi, in eastern Indonesia.

“The deportation of Chinese citizens from Pakan Baru started todayfor other regions to follow soon,” read the words in the Indonesian language this This Facebook post was published on March 8, 2024.

“Pakan Baru” means Pekanbaru, a city on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

The 51-second video shows a group of people screaming in anger and turning around cars instead of being surrounded by trees.

Cthose of the cities of Padang, Medan, Jambi, Lampung, Palembang don’t be quiet without agreement!!!!” the words continue to refer to the big cities in Sumatra.

Government data demonstrations Chinese workers have many foreign workers in and around Indonesia 76,000 Chinese workers recorded in Indonesia from November 2023 (archived links Here and Here).

Similar fake posts shared photos on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTokand video sharing platform SnackVideo, racking up over 27,000 views.

However, the claims are false. The video has been circulating online since September 2023 in a post about protests at a gold mining company on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.

There are no credible reports of Chinese nationals being evacuated from Pekanbaru on March 8, 2024.

‘Against the mining company’

A combination of Google reverse image and Facebook keyword searches found a The long version of the movie printed on Facebook on September 22, 2023 (The link is saved).

According to the 45-minute, 30-second video, thousands of gold miners protested at PT PETS, in Pohuwato regency, Gorontalo province.

PT Tani Sejahtera Gold Peak (PETS) is a gold mining company chili in Gorontalo, Sulawesi Island (archived links Here and Here). The company runs it Where is the Gold Project? my (The link is saved) .

On September 21, 2023, local media report that protesters vandalized and burned the office of PT PETS in a protest against the company’s alleged environmental pollution (The link is saved).

That’s AFP report at the protest that day in Pohuwato. Several people were arrested, police said.

The image in the fake document corresponds to what was seen in the movie 2023 from seven minutes and 37 minutes.

AFP also obtained another report about the protests and similar images, printed and local broadcaster Kompas TV Gorontalo (The link is saved).

In his report, Kompas TV Gorontalo said that the protests that took place at a mining company in Pohuwato regency ended in chaos on September 21, 2023.
