Southern California union hospitality workers ratify new deal with 34 hotels as they press 30 others to sign

Thousands of Southern California hospitality staff they agreed to a new contract with 34 hotels later repeated beatings since the summer, their partnership was announced on Monday.

Housekeepers, cooks and other non-working staff will receive wages of $10 an hour during the contract period, which represents an increase of 40% to 50%, the union said. Half of the increase will come in the first year.

Room attendants in most hotels will earn $35 an hour by July 2027 and executive chefs will earn $41 an hour, the union said. Employees who have been advised will see changes such as double time pay for holidays, vacations, sick days and increased work hours. Only 20% of the contribution in full service restaurants will be shared with 100% of the employees.

The union also emphasized that the union would include health insurance in which workers would pay no more than $20 a month to cover the entire family.

“We have won a a life changing partnership that transforms the hotel industry from a low-wage job to a professional one,” Kurt Petersen, co-president of Local 11, told workers at a meeting outside a Los Angeles hotel.
