Several people were injured as Russian artillery targeted Kyiv

A three-story building in Kyiv has been severely damaged, Ukrainian officials say, as the city comes under renewed Russian attack.

They said two ballistic missiles were recovered, but seven people were injured when debris fell.

Explosions were heard in the capital of Ukraine and thick smoke could be seen rising from the east.

The mayor of the city urged the people to take cover immediately because the attack was carried out unintentionally.

Shortly before the explosion, the Ukrainian military warned in a message on Telegram that a missile was flying into the city.

It is not unusual to have such attacks without an airline warning.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on his Telegram channel: “Explosion in the capital. Hurry to the shelter!”

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, posted videos online that showed schoolchildren running to shelters.

The head of the country’s armed forces said that Russia fired two missiles at Crimea, which were intercepted by Moscow, but both were intercepted by air defenses.

Following a series of explosions, missile debris fell in Pechersky district, near the center of Kyiv, and several other areas.

The attack is the third in Kyiv and Russia in five days.

Recent reports say ten people including a young girl have been injured. Two people were taken to hospital.

Kyiv resident Oksana said she was at work when she first heard the sound of planes followed by explosions.

He told the AFP news agency: “Before I could do anything, the first explosion happened. There was a cloud of dust, broken cars, windows, everything.”

A resident, Roman, told the BBC: “The explosion – which was very powerful, happened just after the plane’s sirens in the capital began to sound.”

The US ambassador to Kyiv, Bridget Brink, said on social media that Russia had used hypersonic missiles to attack the Ukrainian capital.

He also said that “there is not a moment to lose” since Ukraine needs American help now, referring to the $60bn military package that has been in the US Congress.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack also showed that Ukraine needs better air defense practices from its allies.

In a social media post, Zelensky said: “It means the safety of our cities and the saving of people’s lives. All of us in the world who respect and protect life must end this fear.”

Overnight there were also drone attacks in Odesa and Mikolaiv in southern Ukraine, hitting power infrastructure and leaving other areas without electricity.

The latest airstrike in Kyiv comes after Ukraine said it hit two landing craft, a communications center and other equipment used by Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Crimea on Sunday.

Ukrainian officials said the Yamal and Azov vessels were damaged.

The BBC has not been able to confirm Ukraine’s claim that it has destroyed the ships, which are designed to put troops and equipment ashore without the need for a drill or port.

On the same day, one of the Russian warships entered the airspace of neighboring Poland, a member of Nato.

The Polish military said that the object remained in Polish airspace for 39 seconds. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said that if the missile was seen heading towards any targets in Poland, then “of course, it would have been shot down and adequate measures would have been taken”.

On Monday, the Polish Foreign Ministry said that the Russian embassy in Warsaw had failed to come to summon the embassy.

The ambassador, Sergey Andreyev, told the Russian news agency Ria Novosti that he felt “it is pointless to discuss this issue without any evidence, and I refused to go to the Polish foreign ministry”.

There has been an increase in airstrikes by both sides in the past few days, as Russia is slowly making progress in taking part of the eastern part of the country.

On Friday, Russia fired several missiles into Ukraine, hit the dam and leave a million Ukrainians without power, following Ukraine’s bombing of Russian border areas. Russian officials say a drone strike in Ukraine caused a fire at a major power plant in Rostov.

Meanwhile, Kharkiv – near the Russian border – is still in partial darkness after all of its power stations were destroyed by Russian airstrikes on Friday.
