  • A Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s western defenses in Lviv killed one person, while another was killed in an attack in the country’s northeast, officials said.
  • Ukraine’s military said it shot down nine of 11 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight, as well as nine of 14 surface-to-air missiles.
  • The head of Ukraine’s largest power company, DTEK, said five out of six plants were damaged or destroyed, while 80 percent of its production capacity was lost after two weeks of Russian strikes and repairs could take up to 18 months.
  • Hundreds of thousands in Ukraine’s Odesa region were left without power after debris from a downed Russian jet caught fire at a power plant, Governor Oleh Kiper said.
  • In Russia, 10 Czech-made Vampire rockets landed near the Belgorod border, the Defense Ministry said. One woman was injured when a fire broke out after the attack, regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree announcing the start of the new year’s recruitment season, officially hiring 150,000 people.


  • France will supply hundreds of old armored vehicles and new ground-launched missiles to Ukraine in its fight against Russia, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said.
