Oscar Winner Dies – Hollywood Life

Louis Gossett Jr. is said to have died at the age of 87. The late actor rose to fame for his role in the 1982 film. Office and Sister, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was the first Black person to win an Oscar in this category.

The Associated Press reported on Friday, March 29. The cause of Gossett’s death has not been released.

In addition to Gossett’s Oscar-winning role, she was also recognized for her work in the 1977 miniseries. Rootsafter winning an Emmy Award.

The Brooklyn native got his start in show biz in the 1950s after auditioning for a Broadway show. After receiving more recognition, Gossett went on to star in several films. In 1961, he appeared with celebrities Sidney Poitier in A Raisin Sun. In the early years of Gossett’s career, Hollywood encouraged the use of color in many films and TV shows, which she opened up about in a series of interviews.

In conversation with The Times in 2008, Gossett opened up about his experiences in Hollywood as a Black actor.

“I acted like I was in second class. I had to have character,” he told the publication that year, according to Los Angeles Times. “The only time I was really comfortable was when the director said ‘do something’ in front of the camera or on stage and that’s when I flew.”

Eight years later, Gossett said the film industry needed to explore more African American stories.

“Everybody knows about the Romans and the Greeks and the Vikings and the British. But there’s another culture that’s much richer: African culture,” Gossett explained. The Washington Post in 2016. “We have to tell those stories. Our inclusion in history is important to see, especially for African American children. They need to know whose shoulders they are on. “

Gossett was married three times. His first wife was Hattie Glascoe, who he was married to from 1967 to 1968 when they ended their marriage. In 1973, he married Christina Mangosing, and they divorced in 1975. In 1987, the artist married his third wife, Cyndi James-Reese, and they divorced in 1992.

He left behind two children: son Satie and son Sharron.
