The KK Super Mart chain has apologized after pictures of the socks on sale sparked outrage among Muslims.

A convenience store in Malaysia that sparked outrage by selling socks with the word “Allah” was hit by a Molotov cocktail, police said.

This happened on Saturday a few days after the KK Super Mart major was called for hurting religious sentiments because it sold socks.

Wan Mohamad Zahari Wan Busu, police chief in the eastern Malaysian city of Kuantan, said the explosive device caused a small fire at the entrance of a store branch there, but no injuries were reported.

The attack was “still under investigation, but we do not rule out that it could be related to what happened with the word ‘Allah'”, he told AFP reporters.

Pictures of the socks went viral on social media this month, angering some Muslims who see them as offensive, especially because they went to sell them during the holy month of Ramadan.

About two-thirds of Malaysia’s 34 million people are Muslim, with ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities also practicing Islam.

On Tuesday, a petrol bomb was thrown at a KK Super Mart in Perak state, Reuters news agency reported.

The chain’s founders Chai Kee Kan and his wife Loh Siew Mui, the company’s chief executive, were on Tuesday charged with “deliberately injuring … religious sentiments”. Three representatives from the retailer KK Super Mart, Xin Jian Chang, were also charged.

All the accused denied it. The chain’s executives were released on bail, and the case will go to trial on April 29. If convicted, they could face up to a year in jail, a fine, or both.

Malaysia’s second-largest market also apologized for the socks and said it had taken immediate action to stop their sale. It also sued the sock retailer, alleging damages and damage to its reputation.

The retailer said “the distressed socks were part of a larger shipment of 18,800 pairs ordered” from the China-based company.
