Indian police arrested many protesters as they tried to go to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.

Tuesday’s arrest prevented supporters of Delhi’s elected chief Arvind Kejriwal from demanding the opposition leader’s release after he was arrested on corruption charges last week.

The protesters gathered at the Parliament of India to start the march. The police, some in riot gear, quickly surrounded them.

Kejriwal, one of the country’s leading politicians in the last decade and Modi’s arch-enemy, he was arrested Thursday. He and the Aaam Admi Party (AAP), or Common Man’s Party, are accused of accepting 1 billion rupees ($12m) in bribes from liquor contractors nearly two years ago.

The party denied the allegation, saying that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is a fabrication. It has accused the financial institution of being manipulated by the Modi government.

AAP is part of a larger coalition of opposition parties called INDIA, which is the main challenger to Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the general election due to run from April to June.

Kejriwal was remanded for seven days following the court’s order on Friday. His party said he will remain chief minister in Delhi while the case is being taken to court. Hundreds of his followers have been protesting ever since.

The ED accused Kejriwal of being a “king and conspirator” in the bribery case.

Kejriwal’s arrest means that all AAP leaders are in jail. Two of Kejriwal’s aides were arrested last year in the same case.

Ahead of the election, opposition parties have accused the government of abusing its power by harassing and weakening the opposition. They have reported a rise in crime, arrests and corruption investigations of opposition officials.

Meanwhile, some inquiries that were open to opposition leaders who defected to Modi’s BJP have been shelved.

The BJP refuses to look into the opposition and says the law enforcement agencies act independently.
