(Reuters) – A California judge on Wednesday said attorney John Eastman should have his license revoked for trying to turn the 2020 presidential election results on Donald Trump’s behalf.

Eastman, Trump’s former attorney who is now his co-defendant in the Georgia trial of the election tampering effort, was charged with violating the California attorney general’s statute against misleading the courts and making public false statements.

“Eastman’s actions were carried out fraudulently or fraudulently,” Judge Yvette Roland of California’s State Bar Court wrote in her 128-page ruling. She also said that her goal to prevent the victory of Democrat Joe Biden “was illegal and lacked any evidence or legal support.”

Roland led the charge to punish Eastman last year. The California Supreme Court has the final say in all sentencing matters.

Randall Miller, Eastman’s attorney, said in a statement that “Dr. Eastman emphasizes that his approach to the legal issues he was asked to review after the November 2020 election was based on reliable history, prior presidential elections, legislative research, and extensive academic research.” .”

George Cardona, the chief trial judge of the state of California, said that “the injury that caused Mr. Eastman to leave his work as a lawyer, is the threat of his actions to our democracy, more than his impeachment.”

Eastman was indicted separately in August 2023 in Fulton County, Georgia, and has been accused by Trump and others of trying to steal Biden’s 2020 victory in the state. Eastman and Trump refused.

A former law professor at Chapman University in California, Eastman wrote legal documents suggesting that Vice President Mike Pence would refuse to accept nominations from several swing states when Congress met to confirm the 2020 vote. according to the Constitution.

Trump was also represented by Eastman in a long-running US Supreme Court case that sought to invalidate votes in four states where the former Republican president falsified evidence of voter fraud.

Eastman reiterated much of what he said at a rally outside the White House on January 6, 2021, after a group of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol and delayed voter registration.

Several other attorneys on Trump’s trail have also faced criminal or ethics charges or both in their 2020 bids.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has had his New York law license suspended in June 2021 and is expected to be fired from Washington, DC.

Both men were indicted along with Trump and Eastman in Georgia and have pleaded not guilty.
