Easter protesters in Germany want an end to the war in Ukraine and Gaza

People across Germany on Saturday joined Easter celebrations that stemmed from last year’s peace movement, with protesters this year calling for an end to the war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

Walks against nuclear weapons and for peace have been taking place at Easter for more than 60 years. The main day of action is Saturday, with around 70 events scheduled to take place across the country.

In Berlin, around 3,500 people joined the Easter March this year, according to police estimates.

More than 1,000 people marched for peace in the northern city of Bremen, while hundreds took part in demonstrations in Cologne, Duisburg, Saarbr├╝cken, Leipzig and Kassel.

The marchers called for dialogue and solutions on the war in Ukraine, which was launched by Russia on February 24, 2022, and the fighting in Gaza, as well as the end of the supply of weapons to Kiev and Israel.

Israel launched a military operation in the Palestinian territories following the October 7 massacre by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Participants in Berlin carried signs with slogans such as “Friendship with Russia – Viva Palestine,” and “Civilian massacre in Gaza,” referring to the number of civilian deaths caused by Israel’s war.

Others criticized the Berlin government and people waved Russian and Palestinian flags.

The Easter marches grew out of the European peace movement of the past century aimed at denuclearization and opposition to the arms race, with the first Easter march held in Britain in 1958.

This year, the marchers in Germany also want to reject military and military policies.
