AT&T finds over 70 million users’ Social Security numbers on ‘dark web,’ scrambles to reset passwords


AT&T says it has begun notifying millions of customers about a data breach recently discovered online.

The telecommunications giant said Saturday that data found on the “dark web” contained information such as Social Security numbers for about 7.6 million AT&T account holders and 65.4 million account holders.

The company said it has already implemented passcodes for current users and is contacting account holders whose personal information was compromised.

It’s unclear whether the data “came from AT&T or one of its vendors,” the company said. The compromised data was from 2019 or earlier and did not appear to include financial information or call history, it said. In addition to passcodes and Social Security numbers, it can include email and mailing addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth.

While the information surfaced in the cyberspace about two weeks ago, it is similar to a similar breach that occurred in 2021 but which AT&T has not acknowledged, he said. cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt.

“If they look at this and make the wrong call, and we’ve gone years without them notifying the affected customers,” then the company will soon face lawsuits, said Hunt, the founder. of an Australian website that alerts people when their content is exposed.

An AT&T spokesman did not return a request for comment Saturday.

It’s not the first problem this year for the Dallas-based company. Closed in February temporarily they removed the phone service for thousands of US users. AT&T at the time condemned the incident for a technical error, not a malicious attack.
