A bus crashes on a bridge in South Africa killing 45 people. An 8-year-old child is the only survivor

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) – A bus carrying pilgrims to an Easter festival plunged off a mountain bridge and burst into flames in South Africa on Thursday, killing at least 45 people, authorities said.

The survivor of the accident is an 8-year-old child, who is receiving medical treatment, according to government officials in northern Limpopo.

The Limpopo provincial government said the bus left the Mmamatlakala bridge and plunged 50 meters into the river before being set on fire.

Search operations were underway, the provincial government said, but many bodies had been burned beyond recognition and were trapped inside the vehicle.

Officials say they believe the bus was traveling from neighboring Botswana to the town of Moria, which is a popular Easter destination.
