The head coach of the American women’s team Vlatko Andonovski is looking forward to seeing how his inexperienced players deal with the two tough games coming up against Australia.
USWNT meet Matildas on Friday night during US (11 pm ET) in Sydney before the other game on Tuesday in Newcastle.
Of the 23 athletes Andonovski called up, only 10 were in the Olympic team that won the bronze in Japan last summer.
Why did Andonovsky choose this list?
“This did not happen by accident,” Andonovski said of the decision to go to Australia.
“We wanted to try [them] from the bat. We wanted to test the players in this position against some of the best players and we wanted to test them on the problems we face here: long haul, flight delays after a long year of NWSL versus senior. group, 40,000 people at the stadium.
“I think very quickly in this game we will find out who is cut for this and who is not.”
New USWNT era
After a disappointing end to the Olympics, USWNT had four athletes in September and October which required Andonovski to select a team made up of his Olympic team.
But this month’s friendly in Australia saw Andonovski take his chance to bring in a number of untapped players as USWNT anticipates the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Thirteen players in the game have 10 hats or less, including six unnamed players: Bethany Balcer, Bella Bixby, Stand Dorsey, Casey Murphy, Ashley Sanchez and Morgan Weaver.
Only two players in the squad who are 30 years of age or older: 36-year-old defender Becky Sauerbrunn and 30-year-old midfielder Kristie Mewis.
