WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday vowed to go further and change the police force, telling a conference honoring the slain police officers that their work should do more.

“We hope you have everything,” Biden said in a speech to the US Capitol, mourning the 491 executives who died on the job in 2019 and 2020. “We look forward to everything for you.

“And it is beyond the reach of any individual to meet any expectations,” he said. “Being a police officer today is one hell of a lot harder than ever.”

Biden’s recording came as he heard of Saturday’s first shooting in Houston, which left one second dead and two injured. Biden expressed his regret over the incident.

Biden has been loyal to the rule of law since his days in the Senate when he filed the 1994 lawsuit with his own support.

But his contribution to radical change following the assassination of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020 sparked controversy with police forces opposed to the reforms promoted by Democrats.

The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the main body of officers who sponsored the event on Saturday, backed Biden’s Republican opponent Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Attempts to reach a bipartisan reconstruction deal failed in September, indicating the retreat of the Democratic President, who campaigned.

Biden on Saturday praised FOP for “sincere efforts to unite.” He added, “We have not been here,” but “must” do so.

The president said he would work to ensure that police departments are funded by the funds they may need. Biden has already asked Congress for $ 100 million to assist law enforcement agencies in training and employment,

Biden also said he will review other major actions 22 can take involved in assisting the police to answer to charges for violating the law. Officials, he said, needed more help from health professionals and other professionals to address the problems they face on the roads.

Biden commended law enforcement agencies for promoting US democracy in the Jan. 6 at the Capitol.

And he reiterated what he wants to do to reduce gun violence, including human rights activists, efforts that have hampered the delivery of adequate support to Congress, which Democrats control with limited margins in both chambers.

At least 50 officers have been killed this year by gunfire, according to the FOP, over 2020 overall.

The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service began in 1982 as a small group of about 120 survivors and law enforcement agencies. It has also become a major event, attracting thousands of offices and families of victims in the capital city each year.

The White House has issued a proclamation ordering the flags to be flown by half of staff in private homes on Saturday.
