When Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was asked about TJ Watt’s partnership on Wednesday, he called the player “the best player in the game at the moment, not in self-defense, in particular.”
When Watt finished the 2020 season with a lot of bags and finished the Defensive Player of the Year running, Big Ben spoke out loud saying he was the best player in the NFL. Watt is expected to be a Defensive Player this year, according to NFL officials.
What made this possible was the battle for Watt’s contract with the Steelers, as he enters into his five-year contract and owes $ 10.1 million. Once the contract is terminated, Watt will become the highest paid defender in the NFL.
Back in March, Roethlisberger, 39, decided to raise $ 5 million so that other players could earn more money. The 18-year-old veteran quarterback knew he wasn’t growing, so he saw the need to give money to young players, like Watt.
“One of the reasons I take less money is because guys like him get paid,” Roethlisberger said. via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “TJ Watt is a man who deserves to get whatever he wants.”
Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed no doubts at a press conference on Tuesday, saying he was “hopeful” that Watt would get back to the things he was doing this week and be on Sunday’s game against the Bill.
But the timing of the deal is almost over when the NFL Week 1 officially kicks off tomorrow. Roethlisberger, being convinced of Watt’s potential and loyalty to the Steelers, seems to think that Watt deserves more than what the Steelers are giving him now.
“We all feel bad TJ,” Roethlisberger said. “Everyone knows how they want to be out there. They’re here every day and they don’t have to be, working, breaking her ass. She needs to be taken care of.”
Although Roethlisberger has little to say about Watt’s deal, his public comments could persuade the Steelers’ office to complete the deal. Only time will tell, and time will tell.
